Misadventures in Music: Tommy Scott, Space and the Stories Behind the Hits

This one feels a little different.

Not just because of the guest, but because this is the first Misadventures in Music episode you can actually watch as well as listen. And honestly, it suits the chaos, charm and character of Tommy Scott perfectly.

This week, Ian Prowse and Mick Ord sit down with the frontman of Space, the band that gave us some of the most distinctive and downright bonkers hits of the 1990s. Think storytelling, dark humour and melodies that somehow stuck in your head for decades.

And yes, there are stories.

Before the Hits Took Over

Everyone remembers the songs. The ones that sounded like nothing else on the radio at the time.

But before all that, there was a band finding its voice in Liverpool, pulling in influences from everywhere and refusing to sound like anyone else.

Tommy takes us back to those early days, where creativity mattered more than fitting in and where writing a song was about telling a story first and worrying about everything else later.

You get a real sense that none of this was manufactured. It just happened because it had to.

The Madness and the Momentum

When success came, it did not arrive quietly.

The conversation dips into what it was like when the songs took off, when suddenly the band were everywhere and when the momentum of it all started to take on a life of its own.

There are moments that will make you laugh and others that make you realise just how surreal that period must have been.

It is the kind of insight you only get from someone who has actually lived it.

Songwriting with a Twist

What really stands out is Tommy’s approach to songwriting.

There is a theatrical edge to it. A sense that each track is its own little world, full of characters, dark humour and unexpected turns.

He talks about where those ideas come from, how songs evolve and why sometimes the strangest ideas are the ones that connect the most.

It is not about following a formula. It is about trusting instinct and letting the story lead the way.

Why You Will Want to Watch This One

This episode is not just worth listening to. It is worth watching.

Seeing the expressions, the reactions and the moments in between the stories adds something extra. It brings you closer to the conversation and makes you feel like you are right there in the room.

If you grew up with Space, you will love the nostalgia. If you are discovering them for the first time, you will understand very quickly why they stood out.
