Rising star Suki Summer is excited to unveil her latest single, “Summer Crush”. The track blends a variety of genres, including indie pop, dream pop, and bedroom pop, showcasing Suki’s ability to navigate through different musical styles while staying true to her unique and captivating voice. We speak about the new single in depth below.
What’s the most chaotic thing that happened while recording “Summer Crush”?
Well, the day before I recorded Summer Crush, the guy I was talking to told me he’d actually been seeing someone els,e so my friends took me out for a drink to cheer me up. This ended up being a full night out with me getting 2 hours of sleep, then I nearly missed the bus to the studio. So the recording session definitely didn’t get off to the best star,t but I think I love that because it’s so chaotically me haha.
What’s one lyric from the song that still makes you smile every time you hear it?
I love the lyric ‘and I know you think that I’m so confusing I wanna kiss you but don’t know how you’re feeling’. For me, it just perfectly sums up that awkward nervousness of really fancying someone and not knowing whether or not to make a move, incase you’ve misinterpreted their flirting with you.
Let’s talk crushes—what’s your ultimate red flag and green flag when it comes to someone new?
In the past, I’ve been pretty colourblind when it comes to dating, haha. I’d say my biggest red flag in someone new would be a lack of effort, heavy on the if they wanted to they would. I don’t really believe in words I think actions speak a lot louder. My biggest green flag would have to be if they are a yapper and are also creative.
What’s the most unexpected place or situation where you’ve felt inspired to write a song?
I get inspiration for new songs all the time in the most random places but probably when I’m asleep would be the weirdest. I quite often wake up in the middle of the night with an idea for a lyric or a bit of tune or harmony so I have a lot of weird half asleep voice memos on my phone.
If “Summer Crush” were a cocktail, what would be in it?
It would definitely have to be something fruity! Something like a tequila sunrise, or a frozen strawberry daiquiri.
Do you have a songwriting ritual or something weird you always do before a session?
Nothing particularly weird but I do like to be on my own on the way to the studio. I tend to listen to the instrumental track and just go through lyrics as quite often I make a lot of changes and have spontaneous ideas on my way the studio.
If you could go back and play this song for your younger self, what do you think she’d say?
My younger self would probably say ‘wow so you’re definitely not straight then!’ Joking aside she would probably be very proud of the music I’ve made as it’s the kind of music my younger self would have really loved to listen to.
Dream festival lineup—who are you performing alongside and what’s your setlist opener?
I’ve always wanted to see Arctic Monkeys perfor,m so definitely them. I think I’d also say Lady Gaga, Panic! At The Disco and Saint Levant. My setlist opener would probably be my song ‘Nothing At All’, I’ve always felt that would be a really fun song to come out on stage to!
What’s on your playlist right now? Any guilty pleasures you’re not ashamed of?
I change my playlist literally every week, but SZA is always heavily featured. I’ve also been loving Jessie Reyez, Nija, Erykah Badu and Saint Levant. My guilty pleasure recently has been Role Model’s most recent album, I’m a sucker for a yearning lover boy haha!
When fans message you about your music, what’s the comment or DM that’s stuck with you the most?
I think it’s just lovely to receive any message that someone has found my music and that they love it and find it relatable. All the messages of support I’ve received mean a lot and have stuck with me.
