Can you share a bit about your early experiences performing in Lawrence and how they shaped your musical style?
It has shaped my artistic abilities since I was a child. I grew up listening to hip hop, pop, reaggae, house, freestyle, and reaggaton music. I grew up in a community that loves music and we always find reasons to throw a party. This has influenced my style of music. My music is fun! Party girl music. How could it not be when all we do is party where I am from haha.
How do you balance your hip-hop and pop influences in your music?
I switch it up naturally. It just flows off my lips to the mic tip.
And can you walk us through the moment you freestyled Trigger My Aria in the studio?
It was a mood that day. I remember showing up and immediately went into the booth and let loose. It was magic. The melody flowed and the lyrics rolled off my tongue freestyle. I made up the melody on the spot. My producer whipped up a beat for me and boom out came “Trigger MyAria”. I was triggered by a group of people who are supposed to love me and support me however I was met with disdain and disrespect. Betrayed by my own people. In retrospect that is how they have always responded to my accomplishments. With lack of interest, fake love, or gang up to bully me or work against me. Disregard for my boundaries and dismiss my feelings which triggers my Aria.
Can you describe your creative process when writing songs spontaneously, like you did with Trigger My Aria?
You can’t force it. It comes naturally to me. My creative process happens on its own. The song pretty much writes itself once the idea comes to me. Sometimes it comes to me in the form of a melody then I add words or vice versa. I listen to the beat, write the hook and build the song from there. It is a process. I sometimes have to marinate on it and go back to it. It is hard work. I just do my best with the gifts god gave me and the outcome is pure magic. It takes time to create anything of value. Honestly that really is the trick. I take my time with it. I make love to it slowly. Over 20 years of love making with my music. You can’t rush greatness.
Are there any recurring themes or messages in your songwriting?
Recurring themes are woman empowerment, self love, beauty, confidence, pain, love and most of all fun party girl vibes.
How do real-life experiences, like conflict or bullying, influence your artistry?
A personal experiences are the fuel for my artistry. My EP and few singles now streaming were all born from pain, bullying, betrayal. But also Love, Confidence, woman empowerment and beauty were all major influences.
How do you protect your mental and emotional well-being while expressing such raw emotion in your music?
I keep it real baby just own it. We are all made of magic. I accept I am a force and it is time for the reckoning…. Also protect my peace at all cost. I meet with life coach, journal, write a song. Self care, like meditation and workout. Most of all focus on God, myself and my kids. Not everyone deserves access to you. They can have access to your art but not to you. That has to be earned. I learned this the hard way.
How do you see your music evolving in the next few years?
I see it getting bigger and bigger, greater and greater, grander and grander, I view as legendary.
How did working with producer Mike Midura impact the sound of Trigger My Aria?
Working with Mike is a breath of fresh air. His impact on Trigger myAria as you can hear is brilliant. He adds his magic touch to what I come up with. His beat making is superb and it is a privilege to work with him. He added sound effects and adlibs where he saw fit… his expertise brings the song to another level.
How do you maintain authenticity while appealing to a broad audience?
I tune out the noise. Stay true to myself. I try my best to relate to others as we all go through the same struggles just different circumstances. That is how I maintain authenticity.
