Jake Exavier, a gifted singer-songwriter hailing from Zachary, Louisiana, continues to captivate listeners with his genre-blending style, heartfelt lyrics, and smooth vocal delivery. Inspired by artists like Chris Brown, Usher, PartyNextDoor, and The Weeknd, Jake is steadily carving out his own space in the industry with authenticity and undeniable talent. We caught up with the rising R&B star to discuss his new single ‘Just What U Like’.
“Just What U Like” has such a smooth, nostalgic energy. What inspired the mood and message behind the song?
Thank you! I really appreciate that. I have to thank one of my mentors, Rochad Holiday for that! He produced the track and I was excited the moment I heard it. I had a few melodies that I kept playing with in my head, and actually ended up writing the second verse first. I get a very easygoing, sensual feeling when I hear the track, so I wanted to bring that out with the lyrics.
You worked with Rochad Holiday and Curtis “Sauce” Wilson—legends from the ‘90s R&B group Somethin’ for the People. What was that collaboration like, and how did it influence the final sound?
I always learn a lot working with them. I always feel comfortable being creative working with them too. Whether it’s writing, trying different notes, rhythms, ad-libs. They always help take the song to a greater level.
There’s a confident but tender tone in the lyrics. Was this song written from a personal experience or more of a storytelling perspective?
Both really. I like to mix my personal experiences with different experiences I know my close loved ones and friends have gone through. It helps to keep the music personal to me, but also relatable for others. With this song in particular, I’ll say the first verse is more storytelling. The second verse is definitely more personal to me.
Your vocal delivery is so controlled and emotive. How do you approach recording a song like this to capture the right emotional balance?
Thank you! I really don’t have a certain technique to my approach. I just pray and turn the beat on. Then, I let the rhythms and lyrics come to me naturally.
You’ve mentioned influences like Chris Brown, Usher, and The Weeknd. What have you learned from their music that you apply to your own work?
I learned to make music that people can feel and remember.
You’re building a sound that bridges classic and contemporary R&B. How intentional is that blend, and where do you see your sound evolving next?
Thank you! I would say it’s about 50/50. Yes, it’s intentional, but I honestly just make music that I love to hear. Music I love to sing. Music that’s similar to what I grew up admiring. I always want to keep that sound. That doesn’t mean any song will sound the same! But it will definitely have that classic R&B feel. Plus, I like to try new things. New sounds.
The hook—“Got what you want and just what you need”—is incredibly catchy. What’s your process for crafting memorable hooks like that?
I appreciate that! It really just depends on what lyrics come to me. Most of the time I create the rhythms and lyrics at the same time, but it varies.
What does success look like to you at this stage in your career? Is it streams, impact, connection with fans—or something else?
All of the above! Plus, live shows. Having people come out to see me perform and sing along. That’s what success would look like to me.
As a songwriter, how do you stay authentic in an industry that sometimes leans toward formulaic trends?
For me, writing songs comes with life experiences and growth. That way I can always have new things to say and sing about. Also, I love putting on a new playlist. I love listening to new songs and artists I’ve never heard. I get inspiration that way too.
Finally, what can fans expect next from Jake Exavier? Is “Just What U Like” part of a larger project in the works?
You can always expect new music coming from me! Not stopping anytime soon. Also, I’ll be doing more shows and performances. So, come see me.
