If “MISERICORDIA” had to be the theme song for a movie scene, what would the scene look like?
Uh oh. My inner cinephile is about to come out now that you’ve asked me this. If ‘MISERICORDIA’ were to be in a movie scene, I would envision a scene that feels ethereal. I picture two younger people chasing after each other in slow motion, very much like a scene from a Sofia Coppola film.
You’re trapped in a studio for a week and can only listen to three artists—who’s on the playlist?
Portishead, Mazzy Star, and Massive Attack – the 3 bands that have shaped me.
What was the first album you bought with your own money, and how does it hold up today?
You know, I don’t remember what the first album was that I bought with my own money, but one of the first records that I did buy was a Thirty Seconds to Mars album. It was their ‘This Is War’ album. Such a transformational record for me when I was younger. I may have sold it now… now that I’ve grown out of that phase.
Which song of yours would completely confuse someone who thinks they already know what you sound like?
I would say one of my older songs ‘My Old Soul’ because it’s just such a drastic shift from the rest of my songs. It’s jazzy, boozy, and moody and not many of my songs go that direction.
If you could perform a surprise pop-up show anywhere in the world—no budget restrictions—where would you set up?
New York City!
Would you rather have unlimited studio time with your dream producer or unlimited free gear for life?
I would rather have unlimited studio time with my dream producer. Imagine recording with your dream producer forever… I’d die happy.
What’s the strangest note someone has ever given you on a song—helpful or hilariously unhelpful?
A really talented experimental artist named KÁRYYN once once told me that she could see my music being played at “sexy” late night parties, which was interesting to me because I didn’t realize how everyone’s perception of my music is different. It actually gave me an idea of what I should try to explore more of in the future.
If fans could leave the studio with one souvenir that represents “MISERICORDIA,” what would you hand them?
I can see it being a fragrance. It’d be something warm, spicy, and oriental with notes of leather, cardamom, pepper, incense, tobacco, or cinnamon.
Which fictional character do you think would be a fan of your music?
It’d have to be Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne/Batman. If he was in his Batcave listening to Nirvana, perhaps he’d like my work. There’s something a bit edgy about him. He just seems so… rock n’ roll with a diverse taste in music.
What’s something in your creative process that people would never guess—ritual, habit, superstition, or guilty pleasure?
I always need to have my coffee during my creative process. It just helps me get my creative juices flowing and it gets me in the zone. Without it, I would definitely have a hard time even getting started.
