Today, we’re sitting down with Isadore, an emerging R&B singer-songwriter whose introspective lyrics and soulful melodies have captured the hearts of listeners. With a distinctive sound marked by a soft yet impactful voice, Isadore delves into themes of mental health, uncertainty, and the complexities of modern relationships. Her music resonates deeply with those navigating the often overwhelming journey toward self-discovery and happiness. Let’s dive into her creative process, inspirations, and what’s next on her musical horizon.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your new single, “Hold Up”? What themes were you aiming to explore?

“Hold Up” was inspired by the freedom and confidence that comes from knowing your worth. I wanted to explore themes of independence, self-love, and living life unapologetically. It’s a celebration of being single, empowered, and embracing fun with friends, all while maintaining boundaries and enjoying your own space.

How does “Hold Up” differ from your previous work in terms of sound and lyrical content?

My songs up to date have all been introspective, focused on my mental health, my relationship with myself, and how I process my relationships with other people. In terms of content, sometimes it can be very melancholic. In terms of sound, it tends to be more acoustic (a lot of piano and guitar). I like its simplicity. I think simple instrumental carries a striking contrast to the lyrics, which forces people to listen to the words. The music enhances the lyrics. “Hold Up” is just a very different song. It doesn’t have the same introspection and I’m not talking about myself in the same way. It’s a message of independence, confidence, having fun with your friends, and enjoying living in the moment. The sound is more dance and pop-like, there’s a lot of synthetic instruments being used, so instead of eliciting feelings of despondence it’s supposed to get you off your feet.

You’ve often spoken about using music as a form of self-expression. How does this song reflect your personal journey?

I wanted to capture moments in my life where I experience happiness. “Hold Up” isn’t a reflection of all these moments, but moments where I’m out with my friends and we’re just having fun and enjoying the night. I wanted to have something that considered those moments, since I usually write about moments of solitude.

What was your collaborative process like with the producer on this track? How did it shape the final sound?

Usually, my songwriting process includes creating a melody and then writing words to the melody. I write whatever the melody inspires. Then I’ll find a producer, play the a cappella version, and tell them what I want. We’ll work on creating a beat that fits the melody and the lyrics. The song was a lot more pop and up beat then what I usually do so I wanted something that matched the vibe.

Your music often touches on mental health and relationships. How do you balance introspection with the more upbeat, empowering themes in “Hold Up”?

The key is blending both personal reflection and confidence. While introspection might focus on the challenges and growth from inter- and intrapersonal relationships or mental health struggles, “Hold Up” channels the result of that inner work: empowerment and freedom. It’s about celebrating the point where self-awareness leads to independence and joy. There’s a deeper layer of emotional resilience and self-acceptance, turning personal experience into a bold, uplifting song.

Can you describe the emotions you hope listeners will experience when they hear “Hold Up”?

I want them to feel badass!

As an artist from Toronto, how has your environment influenced your music and creative process?

Toronto has played a huge role in shaping my music and creative process. The city’s diversity, vibrant arts scene, and blend of cultures constantly inspire me. Toronto’s mix of R&B, hip-hop, and Caribbean sounds has pushed me to explore different genres, creating a unique fusion in my music. The hustle mentality of the city also drives me to work harder and stay authentic, reflecting personal growth, relationships, and mental health in my lyrics. The energy and multiculturalism here fuel both my sound and storytelling, making my music relatable and distinct.

What are some of the challenges you’ve faced as a rising artist in the R&B scene, and how have you overcome them?

Breaking through in a competitive industry has been one of the biggest challenges. Building a strong, authentic brand while balancing creative vision with the business side of music can be tough as well. Limited resources for promotion and connecting with key industry people adds to the difficulty. However, staying consistent, focusing on storytelling, and using social media to engage directly with fans have helped overcome these barriers. Collaborating with like-minded artists and producers has also expanded my reach and allowed me to stay true to my sound while growing my audience.

What’s next for you after the release of “Hold Up”?

Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations we should look out for? I’ll be putting out more singles soon and then eventually an EP!

Finally, what message do you hope to convey to your audience with your music, particularly with this new single?

I want to convey a message of self-empowerment and independence. “Hold Up” is about embracing your worth, enjoying life on your own terms, and staying confident in your choices. It’s a reminder to prioritize yourself and celebrate your individuality unapologetically.
