Spitroast Smithdown will hit the spot if you want a chicken feast

I adore eating chicken in every form imaginable, so it was an absolute delight to visit Spitroast Smithdown, who cook great quality food with wholesome ingredients at affordable prices, locally sourcing their products wherever possible. They are fiercely proud of their free-range, organic poultry and having now had the pleasure of tasting it, can understand why.

Walking in, it felt cosy and homely and you’re hit with a satisfying smell of homecooked chicken roasting, the stuff of dreams for me. We were there on a Thursday evening and it seemed the ideal atmosphere for having a relaxed casual chat and for winding down after a hard day’s slog. My mate and I were seated by the spacious front window. Maybe a handful of diners were sprinkled around, and it was a comfortable and sociable space. The staff were welcoming and attentive throughout and always on hand to answer any questions about the menu or to see if we wanted anything and check everything was okay.

With my chicken goggles firmly on I went straight for the kill – opting for half a roast chicken (£7.50) with a side order of sweet potato mash (£3.00). It took no time at all to arrive and I can honestly say it was so juicy, succulent and full of flavour, the skin was perfectly crispy too, a winner for me. The mash was smooth, creamy and not overbearing with the garlic. My mate went for the Superfood Salad (£6.00) – added soft boiled egg (for a quid extra), rocket and spinach, roast beetroot, feta cheese, quinoa, avocado, pumpkin and pomegranate seeds, and a light dressing. Complemented with a side of sweet potato chips (£3.50). The salad was huge and fresh, the fries were well seasoned, hot and hit the spot.

They have a lunchtime menu and the main menu, with clearly labeled gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options. This was a massive bonus for my mate who has a gluten intolerance. The only drawback was that they had run out of their GF dessert (almond cake). I went for the Nutella cheesecake while my poor mate had to watch. Yes, I was guilty but for the purpose of this review, I felt I had to soldier on!

Summing it up, you won’t regret giving it a try. Whether you’re a gang of students, the whole family out for tea, fancying a light bite and a catch-up with a friend, or dining solo, it’s more than a decent contender. Healthy, fresh, nutritious food which is actually appetising, won’t lighten your wallet too much, and easy to find and get to. You can also phone orders in or order via Just Eat or Deliveroo – perfect.
