Michael Robert Murphy continues his collaboration with The Coral’s James Skelly who produces and also performs on ‘feel good’, seasonally lifting and addictive new single ‘Holding On’ , with a joyous fun video alongside directed by Pixey and The Howlers’ director Marieke Macklon.
Michael’s journey since going solo last year has been an intriguing organic trip, walking us through the many dimensions of his songwriting and quickly proving he is much more than the frontman and singer-songwriter of once Liverpool Psych Rockers The Wicked Whispers. After a lo-key debut EP drop (Featuring the highly contagious ‘Out Of Sight’) which stripped his songs down to the core, Michael then joined forces with pal and mutal fan, James Skelly (Of The Coral and producer of Blossoms / Lathums) to start recording some tracks which would be the first singles from an upcoming album project.
Recent single ‘Puzzles’, (The first single working with Skelly) was certainly a step once more into psychedelia for Michael, with a very modern and interesting twist. ‘Holding On’ still carries elements of this , with its cutting mellotron layering and solo with 60’s organs (even using some of Noel Gallagher’s instruments that was on hand) that takes us to a more uplifting vibrancy. The new single is nailed by its simplicity, one that only Michael’s songwriting and James’ penning of ‘Dreaming Of You’ and ‘In The Morning’ could conjure up. For ‘Holding On’ Skelly takes to the Smiths-Marr Style guitars and backing vocals on the track while Michael takes lead on Vocals, Bass and guitars. The two singing and working together feels very much at home. The Song itself is all a very simple message of hope, nothing more, claims Michael. ‘We have all faced some dark moments over the past 18 months I’m sure, this is just me being positive as I always am even If I am not feeling it, but giving a prospective of everything is going to be fine and we are all together, cheesy I know, but sod It, this is what listening to Neil Young for hours on end with a bottle of red wine brings you’
For the video Michael was thrilled to work with one of his current favourite video directors Marieke Macklon, whose recent video work with Red Rum Club, Pixey and The Howlers have been stunning. The treatment was simple, for Michael to play a poker game in a nonsensical dream like scenerio. “The song is uplifting but has some deep tones to the lyrics, so we wanted a video to sum this up but by being visually a bit more silly, fun and psychedelic’ says Michael of the poker game that finds him in with a Frog, Poodle and Horse after being kidnapped by a Duck! We just wanted to have some fun and do something different than Id dont before.

Quick Bio :
Since Liverpool psych-rock hero’s The Wicked Whispers last rang in our ears, one of Liverpool’s most respected songwriters finally graced us with news of a new solo project, almost sneaking in the backdoor with little fuss, kicking off with his debut single ‘Out Of Sight’ the single has led the way pleasing Wicked Whispers fans but opening Michael up to a new and modern audience. The track was a first look at how Michael could hold his own and gathered some wonderful critical praise (Shindig! Magazine noted Michael’s pressive Songwriting) and reactions with BBC Introducing Merseyside highlighting it as one of their standout pics for 2020 after multiple spins on the show. EP tracks ‘Hollow World’ and, the folk / rock ballad ‘Dry Those Tears’, is a dedication to his wife Natasha, whom has been and remains Michael’s ‘Muse’ and an inspiration throughout his songwriting years.
A deluxe Version of the Debut EP followed which included remixes from Bobby Bentham (Strange Bones), Lee Smith (The Tea Street Band) and an inclusion of lost demo ‘Wasps Nest’ recorded in his kitchen on an old 4-track early 2020
Michael returns in 2021 with new singles ‘Puzzles’ and ‘ Holding On’ produced by The Coral’s James Skelly, recorded at the legendary Parr Street Studios, Liverpool.
